Back in 1973 a typist, a stenographer and a secretary showed the other smart white girls in the rest of Australia just how fun it was to live and work in Canberra.
According to the sticker on the front of the book, this piece of retro gold was saved from obscurity and plucked from the Public Service Commission Library. It’s had a new lease on life after turning into a Viral hit amongst the good working people of Canberra, who consider themselves lucky to experience the “Wonder And Joy” that is our nation’s capital.
For more information just send a letter to “The Recruitment Officer, The Public Office Board, Box 391 P.O., Canberra City, 2601, or the Public Service Inspector’s office in each capital city”

Needs more pictures of drug addicts asking for money and of course SUMMERNATSS!!!!
There is a glaring omission from this. In the 1970s you could never get your car, hot water, fridge, TV, etc fixed in a hurry. The excuse was always “waiting for a part from Sydney”.
Here we go. Let the Canberra-bashing begin!!!
Great bit of old promo material, it’s fabulous!
But please people, save your cynical remarks for something worthwhile, beating up the Nation’s capital is getting so very boring!
Is the hip long blonde headed bloke in the last few photo’s Kevin Rudd ?
I loved Canberra in the ’70s I worked at Perisher and would visit Canberra often to shop and catch up with friends. It was a happening place – if you knew where to go. Aaaahhh The Lobby Restaurant, Mogambo in Manuka too. Memories – all good!
Thanks!
Hey you should make a tv show of yesteryear about canberra. “Canberra Canberra Canberra” in the ilk of the opening credits of little britan, only with a distinctive aussie pollies feel. Just a thought
They had to put barb wire around the roof top of Gowrie Hostel and block the door, cause too many residents were jumping off. True! But I’m a Canberran and I love the place. I do live in Darwin though…
Moved to Canberra from Sydney 5 years already. Still loving Canberra
I was born in the ‘Berra in 1971 so while I can’t testify to the accuracy of the awesomeness depicted in these photos, I can confirm that with the arrival of hipsters with their skinny pants and porno moustaches, Canberra once again looks EXACTLY like this now…
I attended Gough Whitlam’s fabulous Festival of Arts and Sciences in March 1975 in Canberra. It was a heady experience and Canberra was abuzz with political intrigue. Did we really look like this? Oh dear …. and we thought were so, so cool. And where are the spies in these shots? And why isn’t Junie Morosi featured? Here she is in 1975 http://www.portrait.gov.au/site/collection_info.php?searchtype=basic&searchstring=&irn=557
I have a friend who lives in Canberra and all he does is clean his house and do his tax. A few weeks ago he bought a toilet seat cover to cheer himself up.
That said, I hear Canberra now has some ‘Melbourne style’ cafes. Is this true?
@shane : yeah there are some good ones now… I love The Urban Pantry in Manuka
I heard there are also some ‘Melbourne Style’ bars now in civic. Is this true?
